Tactical Analysis
Well, what can I say? In terms of pure quality, Real Madrid arguably has no rivals. You could create dozens of starting lineups, each better than the last. Moreover, with the sheer number of world-class attacking players in the club’s history, I’m forced to go for a hyper-offensive setup, even though I’ve tried to maintain a minimum level of balance.
Goalkeepers
Casillas is undoubtedly the greatest goalkeeper in Real Madrid’s history. No debate here, right? Buyo is an excellent backup, and Rogelio Dominguez is underrated, sure, but Iker deserves the number one jersey, no questions asked.
Defense
Sergio Ramos is non-negotiable. While he may not be the absolute best in terms of pure defensive qualities, his impact in the white shirt, his clutch goals, and his consistent performances make him the cornerstone of this defense.
Alongside him, you could argue for Santamaria or Hierro, but I’ve gone with the latter because of his superior ball-playing ability and vision—absolutely key in my opinion.
On the flanks, I’m going with Roberto Carlos and Chendo. Roberto Carlos was a phenomenal left-back, one of the best of his generation: fast, powerful, and technically gifted. On the right, I’ve opted for the less flashy but more defensively solid and consistent Chendo.
Midfield
Yes, you read that correctly—a two-man midfield. In reality, Di Stefano drops back to form a 4-3-3 in possession, but on paper, it’s two midfielders.
The combinations here are endless: Kroos-Redondo, Zidane-Kroos, Modric-Zidane, and so on—they all work beautifully. However, I’ve gone with Pirri for two reasons:
- Compared to others, he provided more defensive coverage, dynamism, and tenacity.
- He’s one of the most underrated players in Real Madrid’s history. Pirri was a complete player capable of excelling anywhere on the pitch with magnificent performances.
Attack
Here’s where the fun begins.
Di Stefano and Puskas are one of the greatest attacking duos in football history. They have it all: legendary status, complementary characteristics, charisma, and consistency. I couldn’t leave them out—apologies to Raul.
On the wings, Gento on the left made history with the club, and the same goes for Cristiano Ronaldo on the right. Two icons who defined eras in Madrid’s history.
